Fort Thomas Kentucky is a great place to call home.  Located in Campbell County, Kentucky, just south of the Ohio River, on Interstate 471.  The proximity of Fort Thomas to downtown Cincinnati makes it a convenient place to live.  If you commute downtown for work or want to be close to downtown for leisure activities you should check out Fort Thomas.   Living in Fort Thomas gives residents a sparse suburban feel.  Perched on the hill overlooking the Cincinnati skyline and Ohio River Valley the views are breathtaking.  The City of Fort Thomas has a long and rich history.  Based on artifacts found it appears that on or around 1749, before settlement by Europeans a large battle occurred in Fort Thomas between a band of Cherokee Native Americans and the victorious Miami tribe and Shawnee tribe of Native Americans.  Archeologists have found as many as 600 graves of slain warriors there.  Even today in certain areas of the city it is not unheard of to unearth a native American arrowhead while gardening.

In 1887 the United States Army was in search of a post to replace the Newport Barracks located in Newport Kentucky.  The Newport Barracks was located near the junction of the Ohio and Licking Rivers and was prone to flooding.  General Phillip Sheridan personally selected 11 acres of what is now the City of Fort Thomas for the new army post.  The post was named Fort Thomas in honor of General George Henry Thomas.  General George Thomas was one of the top Union Generals in the Civil War.  Military activities continued in the area until the fort was closed in 1964.  One of the most notable recruits was a man by the name of Paul Tibbets whe enlisted on February 25, 1937 as a flying cadet in the United States Army Air Corps.  During the last days of World War II Paul Tibbets was the pilot that dropped the first atomic bonon on August 6, 1945.

There are many remains of this era still today in the City of Fort Thomas.  There is a 102 foot tall stone water tower that still stands today at the entrance to Tower Park.  The water tower has a capacity of 100,000 gallons.  The water tower was built to supply water to troops at Fort Thomas.  At the base of the water tower are two cannons that were captured in Cuba’s Havana Harbor during the Spanish American War.  The Cannons are dated 1768 and 1769 marking the dates the cannons were made in Barcelona Spain. The former Armory is now a city recreation center.  In addition Non commissioned officer homes near South Fort Thomas Avenue have been renovated and sold as private residences.

Fort Thomas is well known for its independent school district.  The elementary schools in Fort Thomas include Robert D. Johnson Elementary, Ruth Moyer Elementary, and Samuel Woodfill Elementary.  The middle school is Highlands Middle and the high school is Highlands High School.  The Fort Thomas schools are consistently ranked among the top in the country.  There are private schools in Fort Thomas as well including Saint Thomas Elementary and Saint Catherine Elementary.

Fort Thomas also has a variety of different parks.  These include Tower Park, Highland Hills Park, Rossford Park, Riggs Memorial Park, Fort Thomas Soccer Park, Winkler Fields, Stoors Fields, River Road Fields, Shawnee Field, South Park Field, and Upper and lower Army Reserve Fields.  These parks offer a variety of features including soccer fields, baseball fields, restrooms, picnic areas, grills, walking trails and playgrounds.

Fort Thomas has its very own country club called Highland Country Club.  The club was founded in 1915.  Amenities include an 18 hole golf course, a junior olympic 25 meter pool and clubhouse with dining and banquet facilities.  The golf course is a par 70 and 6,400 yards long with challenging hills and picturesque views.  The golf course at Highland is a true test of your golfing skills.
